How to pick a colour from your screen
- Press Pick colour. The cursor turns into an eyedropper.
- Click anywhere on screen - including another tab or window - to sample that pixel.
- Copy the value in the format you need: HEX, RGB or HSL.
Which colour format should you use?
All three describe the same colour. HEX is the most common in design handoff; HSL is the easiest to adjust by eye, because changing the lightness value alone gives you a consistent tint or shade.
| Format | Looks like | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| HEX | #4F46E5 | CSS, design tools, brand guidelines |
| RGB | rgb(79, 70, 229) | CSS with transparency, canvas code |
| HSL | hsl(243, 75%, 59%) | Building tints and shades by hand |
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick a colour from another tab or app?
Yes. The eyedropper samples pixels from anywhere on your screen, not just this page, so you can pull a colour out of an image, a website or a design tool.
Which browsers support this?
It uses the EyeDropper API, supported in current versions of Chrome and Edge. Safari and Firefox do not support it yet, and the tool will tell you if your browser cannot run it.
Is my recent palette saved?
It is kept in your browser and shared between open tabs of this tool. Nothing is sent anywhere, and it clears when you clear your site data.
