Add Page Numbers to PDF

Merged documents lose their numbering, and a bundle nobody can cite is hard to work with. This stamps a sequential number onto every page so the file can be referenced, printed and reassembled if it is dropped.

How to add page numbers to pdf

  1. Upload the PDF, ideally after merging and reordering everything.
  2. Generate the numbering.
  3. Download the paginated document.

Number last, not first

Numbering is stamped onto pages in their current order. Merge, remove and reorder first - otherwise a later change leaves you with a document whose printed numbers disagree with its actual sequence, which is worse than having none at all.

Treat it as the final step before a bundle goes out.

Court bundles, tender submissions and thesis appendices are usually required to be continuously paginated so that any page can be referred to unambiguously in a hearing or a review.

The stamped number counts the pages of the file. Where a submission demands a specific numbering scheme, such as Bates numbering with a prefix, check the requirement before relying on a plain sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is opened and rewritten by your browser, so it never leaves your device. That matters for contracts, invoices and anything with personal data in it.

Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?

Numbering runs across the whole document. To leave a cover sheet unnumbered, split it off, number the rest, then merge the cover back on.

Will the numbers cover existing content?

They are placed in the page margin. Documents with very tight margins or existing footers should be checked before sending.
