How to convert JPG to WebP

  1. Drop your JPG file onto the upload area, or click it to choose a file from your device.
  2. Pick a quality level. 90% keeps the image visually identical to the original in most photos.
  3. Press “Convert to WebP” and wait a moment - the work happens on your own device.
  4. Compare the original and converted sizes, then press “Download WebP”.

Why convert JPG to WebP?

Smaller images load faster, and faster pages rank and convert better. Swapping a page full of JPG hero images for WebP often removes hundreds of kilobytes without anyone noticing a visual difference.

WebP also handles gradients and flat colour areas more cleanly than JPG, which tends to produce blocky artefacts in skies and shadows at aggressive quality settings.

Because both formats are lossy, converting JPG to WebP re-encodes an already-compressed image. Use a high quality setting here, and where possible convert from the original file rather than from a heavily compressed JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose quality converting JPG to WebP?

The image is decoded and re-encoded, so a second round of lossy compression is applied. At 90% quality this is usually invisible, but converting from the highest-quality original you have will always give the best result.

Should I use WebP for everything on my site?

For photographs and graphics, yes. Keep SVG for logos and icons that are already vector, since SVG scales perfectly and is often smaller still.

Can I convert several images at once?

This tool converts one image at a time. Batch conversion is on the roadmap.
