How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG file onto the upload area, or click it to choose a file from your device.
  2. Pick a quality level. 90% keeps the image visually identical to the original in most photos.
  3. Press “Convert to WebP” and wait a moment - the work happens on your own device.
  4. Compare the original and converted sizes, then press “Download WebP”.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

Page speed. Images are usually the heaviest part of a page, and WebP gives you the same picture in noticeably fewer bytes. That feeds directly into Largest Contentful Paint, which is a Core Web Vitals metric Google measures.

Unlike JPG, WebP keeps the alpha channel, so logos, icons and product cut-outs stay transparent. That makes it the natural replacement for PNG on a website rather than a compromise.

The one place to be careful is anything that leaves the web: some desktop applications, older email clients and print workflows still expect PNG or JPG. Keep an original for those uses.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep PNG transparency?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas are preserved exactly as they were in the PNG.

Is WebP supported everywhere?

Every current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge displays WebP. Very old browsers and some non-web software do not, which is why many sites still keep a JPG or PNG fallback.

How much smaller will my file be?

It depends on the image. Photographs and complex gradients usually shrink the most; a flat two-colour logo that PNG already compresses well may shrink very little.
