How to count words

  1. Type directly into the box, or paste text from anywhere.
  2. The counts update on every keystroke - there is no button to press.
  3. Use the character count with spaces for platform limits, and the count without spaces for typesetting work.

Where the limits come from

Character limits are everywhere: meta descriptions are usually truncated around 155–160 characters, a meta title around 60, and most social platforms enforce a hard cap on post length.

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, a widely used average for adults reading on screen. Technical or unfamiliar material is slower; light narrative is faster.

Word counting is less standardised than it seems. Here a word is any run of non-whitespace characters, so hyphenated terms count as one and numbers count as words - which matches how word processors behave.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute. It is an estimate for planning, not a precise measurement.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is counted in your browser as you type. Nothing is stored and nothing is transmitted.

How are sentences counted?

By counting terminators - full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Abbreviations such as "Dr." can inflate the count slightly.
